Saving Money for the Trip of a Lifetime

by Janell R. Koehler

You’ve got a dream holiday, a plan for a trip of a lifetime that you really want to see become a reality and not that pipedream that becomes forgotten and one of those things on a long list that never gets completed. How do you go about putting away enough savings to actually go through with it, to supplement a loan to cover certain costs?

Here we put together a few tips for you to follow, to enable you to make that dream become a reality, a lot faster than you thought possible. It will take hard work, dedication and a bit of pestering, but it’ll all be worth it in the end.

 Cut Your Work Food Budget

Each day for work most people will spend money on food and drink. Whether it’s a coffee from an expensive chain store on their way to the office, a meal deal lunch from a supermarket for lunch, snacks through the day and even the odd post work meal or drink, it can all begin to add up. Instead, always make a packed lunch for work, start drinking water more often (this is also better for your help but we’re not preachy!) and you’ll soon notice a difference in your bank balance.

 The Pennies Add Up

Keep a piggy bank for change. It might seem trivial but it’ll soon add up to pounds, which can then be transferred into notes and straight into your savings account. Every time you get change from the shop, put that money straight into your piggy bank. Of course, you’ll be adding literal pennies at first, but set a rule that whenever you have say, 50p or less in change it gets put into savings and it will make a difference.

Keep on Top of Your Banking Situation

Sign up to email and text alerts and make it a habit to check your bank account on regular periods, whether that is weekly or monthly is down to you. For many people the end of the month brings with it dread over what the state of their bank balance is going to be. Keep on top of your account, budget thoroughly week by week and know how much exactly you can put into your holiday fund without putting yourself under pressure for next month.

 Change Your Present Requests

We’re not advocating begging family and friends to pay for your entire holiday budget, but if you have a large financial goal to make that will set up your trip of a lifetime, why not make friends and family know that you would prefer Christmas and birthday presents to be ditched in favour of a contribution to the pot, as long as they know they don’t have to pay more than they normally would.

 Budget Booker

Travelling the world might not cost you as much as you think. Keep on eye out for offers from specific budget travel operators, or book different parts of your trip separately so you can shop around and find the best deals for your budget. This also applies to your everyday life in preparation for the holiday of a lifetime; keep your eyes peels for sales and offers for everything in your life.
