What You Need to Know About Unsecured Business Loans

by Janell R. Koehler

Taking a loan is generally a risky decision. However, it’s a decision that many people are forced to make. If you just don’t have any money to survive, your only option is to ask for money from a bank or some other credit lending institution. However, banks and credit lending institutions generally consider giving out loans as a sort of investment. They charge interest on their loans, but they also try to mitigate the risks involved as much as possible. One of the main factors that most lending institutions consider is the credit score of the borrower.

In order to apply for a loan from a bank, you must meet the eligibility criteria. This includes a minimum credit score that you must achieve, and you generally have to possess assets to use as collateral or security. However, there are many companies that also offer unsecured business loans. As you can probably imagine, unsecured loans are generally riskier, and the lending institution is taking a bigger gamble by giving out such a loan. Here are a few things that will help you get a better understanding of such loans.

Interest Rates

There’s a major difference between the interest rates involved with unsecured loans as compared to the secured kind. That’s because the company is taking a major risk by giving you the money without keeping any collateral at all. If you are taking out a secured loan, for example, and fail to make the payments on time, the bank or any other lending institution will take possession of the collateral that was established during the initial contract. A very common example of a secured loan is a mortgage loan, which must be secured by some sort of property. In case you fail to make your mortgage payments, your house will be foreclosed and the bank will assume possession. However, because unsecured loans do not have such features, the interest rate charged is much higher.

Providers

It’s difficult to get an unsecured business loan from any bank nowadays. After the crash of the economy back in 2008, banks and lending institutions have revised their eligibility criteria and now require a series of different documents that you need in order to get the loan. However, there are many private companies that still offer unsecured loans. You can apply through a private lender if you want an urgent influx of cash. Obviously, there’s a small issue here; because the company isn’t regulated by the Central Bank, they are free to charge any interest rate.

However, if you want to start your own business and you need some money quickly, applying for an unsecured loan is a great option. It helps get your business off the ground without having to spend a great deal of money. Of course, you can continue to make monthly payments on your debt as your business grows, thus making it easier for you to repay the loan over time. Obviously, this isn’t a viable option for people who need money at the end of each month just to tide themselves over until their salaries arrive.
